Scooping Top Honours at 2014 Flogas Mayo Masterchef Competition

Area representative Michael Keogh had the very enjoyable task of presenting prizes to all the budding and seasoned professionals who scooped top honours at the second annual Flogas Mayo Master Chef Competition on Mon 7 April 2014 at the Mayo Abbey Cookery School, Claremorris.

Michael said, “I would like to commend Mayo Abbey and the Chefs of Mayo Club for all the hard work they have put into this wonderful initiative. I was very impressed with the excellent standard of culinary skill and delicious looking entries on show. As one of the leading suppliers of LPG to the hotel, restaurant and hospitality industry, Flogas is constantly seeking ways to encourage and promote culinary excellence so we are delighted to be involved once again.”

Barry Ralph of the Bayleaf Restaurant, Turlough, Castlebar won the Senior Fish category for the second year in a row. Mark Gallagher of the Dalton Inn, Claremorris was second and third went to Tobias Streitenberger, formerly of Knockrany House Hotel, Westport.

The Irish Chicken-Junior Chef class was open to junior chefs and cookery students and Dymphna Killeen from Claremorris came first. Second was Gabrielle Gilroy from Foxford and third was Vincent O’Toole from Ballinrobe.

The Hot or Cold Plated Dessert Class had two joint winners, chef Tobias Streitenberger, student Donna Cassidy from Claremorris. Student Dymphna Killeen came third.

The Celebration Cake Class was won by Philomena Noyes from Kilkelly, who is heavily involved in charity work and has written cookery books to raise funds for Cystic Fibrosis. Junior chef Kathleen Staunton from Castlebar came second and Julie Gallagher from Claremorris was third.

The Decorated Gateau Class was once again won by Bicky Bissell, pastry chef at the Hotel Westport. Philomena Moyes came second and Kathleen Staunton from Castlebar took third.

Donna Cassidy also took first place in the Hygiene Excellence Award, open to competitors in the Junior Chicken and judged on their performance in this class.

Seamus O’Doherty, chairperson of the Chefs of Mayo Club, said “This year, we had 28 entries spread over five classes and everyone is to be congratulated on an excellent display of culinary skills. It is going from strength to strength with standards rising significantly over a 12 month period and we hope to expand the classes and numbers next year.”

The Mayo Abbey Cookery School is a charitable non-profit making organisation run by a voluntary management committee, with a shop open to the public on Fridays selling scones, pastries and organic vegetables grown inhouse..
