Flogas is delighted to ‘electrify’ the Drogheda and District Athletic Club (DDAC) by sponsoring the cost of electricity for the floodlights at its new running field in Newtownstalaban. This means that the club can now run events all year round on its brand-new all-weather track.

Ciara O’Reilly, chair of the DDAC committee, said, “Thanks to Flogas and our other very generous sponsors, we can now invest in developing the grounds further. Plans are underway to create a throwing and long jump area for our field event competitors and with the soon to be installed purpose built hill on the back section of our field, 2020 promises to be a great year for all those involved in our club’s activities!”

The very active club committee hosts many events throughout the year for all ages and abilities. Its three-race series, the Drogheda 10k, the Midsummer 5K and the Christmas 5k, consistently attract huge numbers who like to dress up, show up and enjoy the carnival atmosphere that accompanies each race. In particular, the Drogheda 10k has become the town’s number one mass participation event and the pre-race atmosphere attracts several thousand spectators who come out to cheer on family and friends on their six-mile run around the historic town and surrounding Boyne Valley.

Apart from the many first timers who are happy just to get around the course, the Drogheda 10K also features many of its talented athletes who have won medals at the European and World Masters Championships.

The club also runs ‘Couch to 5k’ events for nervous ‘newbies’ and these have proven very popular with the number of participants growing year on year and fast friendships forming as a result.

DDAC also has over 150 junior members and the community-based club hosted its first Schools Cross-Country event in 2019, which was extremely successful, with over 500 children turning up.

Eoin O’Flynn, marketing manager, Flogas Ireland said, “Drogheda and District AC is a great example of an energetic and committed club dedicated to the local community and to promoting the idea that athletics is for all ages and abilities. We’re delighted to support them and wish them the best of luck in their new home!”
