Flogas support Team YesChef & Irish Cancer Society

Flogas are proud to have continued our sponsorship of Team YesChef for 2018, where chefs and those from the hospitality industry partake in a three-day cycle covering 300km in aid of charity.  Now in its third year, Team YesChef began cycling on the 21st of May from Lisdoonvarna and from what we can see, the event got a big ‘thumbs-up’ from everyone involved!

The original concept for Team YesChef was to bring a few chefs together for a couple of days of fun cycling in the west of the country. Such was the success of the event and enthusiasm of the industry to get involved, this has developed over the last couple of years. Cyclists raise a minimum of €500.00 to pay for their accommodation, board and support for the event, with any monies remaining to be given to the Irish Cancer Society. Team YesChef hope to have a final tally over the next month of the total raised for a much deserving charity, the Irish Cancer Society.

On the 21st May, riders congregated at the Burren Storehouse, Lisdoonvarna to register with event organiser Nicci Smith. From there, the 35 strong troupe of chefs and participants set off around 11.30am with the rain pouring down and cycling against a strong headwind. Beginning to wonder if it could get any worse, by the time they arrived at their first food stop, the weather began to break to be followed by blissful weather for the rest of the event. Over the course of the event, the route took them from Burren Storehouse to Galway, around Connemara, back to Galway and return on day three to Lisdoonvarna.

Nicci Smith, YesChef comments: “We would like to send a huge thanks to our sponsors Flogas, Lynas and CLASSIC drinks, their support makes a massive difference and we really couldn’t do it without them. Thanks also to The Merriman and Peacockes hotels who kindly allow us to use their facilities for food stops. David Newman from Java Coffee who fuels our chefs with tea and coffee and to chef Paddy Mullins from Pimento in Carlow who gives joins us for three days to feed our hungry cyclists. Of course no thanks would be complete without a mention to Caile Ni Flanagha who provides physio and first aid care for our weary troupe. And of course, massive thanks to Kieran O’Halloran, Viv Kelly and all the team in the Storehouse, Lisdoonvarna for allowing us to use their wonderful space and creating a superb celebratory meal on our final night”

Plans for next year are already picking up speed… with a change of location and the introduction of shorter routes for chefs wishing to become a part of the event but who may cycle very little or maybe not at all. Team YesChef are also looking at the introduction of “foodie stops” celebrating the best in the locality as an added extra to the event. The event will also be over two days rather that three giving chefs and industry professionals a better chance of getting out of the kitchen for a shorter period of time.
