The Burren Slow Food Festival in Lisdonvarna from 23-25th May 2008 was a great success with 1,500 people taking part during the weekend. The Flogas Cookery Demonstration featured top chefs Clodagh McKenna and Aidan McGrath. Clodagh McKenna from the popular "Farmers Market" TV program arrived from Italy to do a "Clare Menu" in Lisdoonvarna Town Hall. Aidan McGrath (Executive Chef Doonbeg Golf Club) concentrated his demonstration on fish - Hake, Clarinbridge Oysters and Lobsters. At the event, John McKenna from Bridgestone Guides spoke passionately about the Slow Food Movement. The Weekend was officially opened by Tony Killeen, Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (with special responsibility for Fisheries and Forestry). He was surrounded by the Local Farmers Market of Local Clare Producers like St Tola Goat’s Cheese, Cratloe Hills Sheep’s cheese, Wilde's Chocolate and other Clare Traders. Seed Savers were represented and Burren Beo information available. The seven course Slow Food Gala Dinner created by Head Chef/Owner Tony Lynch, the Longdock Restaurant at the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Centre was enjoyed with a performance from a local harpist and the promising young tenor Peter Donoghue. The setting was perfect seeing the sun set over Liscannor Bay and the Aran Islands. Sunday 25th May continued with a glorious day for walking in the Burren with a fabulous Slow Food Lunch with a theme of local honey at Gregan's Castle Hotel at the bottom of Corkscrew Hill. The weekend was finished off with 3-act Supper Theatre by Meridian theatre company and a light Supper with Clare produce in the interval. Following this year’s success, Slow Food Clare are now planning a Burren Slow Food Festival for May 2009 hoping to cater for even increased numbers of visitors.
